How to Fix a Chipped Tooth

While teeth are some of the most durable structures in the human body, they are not completely insusceptible to chips, breaks, and other kinds of damage. A chipped tooth most commonly results from a traumatic facial injury; however, it’s also common for individuals to chip their teeth when trying to open a package or a bottle with their mouth (which is never a good idea!). Even a minor chip in an otherwise healthy tooth can cause a significant effect on one’s overall smile aesthetic. The good news is, there are several effective ways to fix a chipped tooth, and all of them are available from Dr. Skasko here at Elite Dental!

Here are a few of the most popular treatments to restore a chipped tooth:

Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are a good option for a variety of cosmetic dental concerns, and addressing chips is one of the most prominent benefits of this solution. Porcelain veneers are custom-designed dental restorations that fit over the front and sides of a chipped tooth. They are made to look exactly like a natural tooth, serving to “mask” the chip and produce results that appear as though the tooth was never damaged.

Cosmetic Bonding
Cosmetic dental bonding is an alternative to porcelain veneers that can also effectively restore a chipped tooth. This treatment involves the application of a durable resin that is carefully shaped and hardened, essentially rebuilding the lost part of the tooth with a tooth-colored dental material. While cosmetic bonding is often a more cost-effective option when compared to porcelain veneers, the results typically are not as long-lasting. With that in mind, proper care of the tooth after dental bonding can help the effects last for many years.

Dental Crowns
A custom dental crown may be necessary if the tooth is chipped so badly that its overall structure and health is endangered. A porcelain dental crown covers the entire tooth and is designed to provide enhanced strength and a natural appearance. This option can not only improve both function and aesthetics, but can also help prevent additional decay and damage from further compromising the tooth’s health.

What Causes Teeth Staining?

Tooth discoloration is a problem that happens to everyone over time. Despite being a normal concern, stains can make people feel self-conscious about their smile, even causing them to hide their teeth in public. If you struggle with yellow or brown teeth stains—or just want to brighten the overall shade of your teeth—our cosmetic dentist, Dr. Andrew E. Skasko, offers multiple dental procedures that can help transform the look of your smile.

Depending on the types of stains you have on your teeth and what caused them, you may be a better candidate for one type of treatment over another. Common causes of teeth staining include the following:

  • Certain foods and drinks, such as coffee, tea, wine, berries, marinara, and curry
  • Overexposure to fluoride as a child
  • Medications, like tetracycline antibiotics
  • Trauma that caused internal damage
  • Smoking or using other tobacco products

Whenever possible, you may want to avoid these culprits or at least limit them to minimize teeth staining. However, even if you don’t eat staining foods or have a habit of smoking, you may find your teeth aren’t as bright as they once were.

Also sometimes you may need good ED pill. Cheap delivery, no prescription for German customers. Buy Viagra today!

To help whiten your teeth for a beautiful and healthy-looking smile, you may be a good candidate for a procedure like teeth whitening or porcelain veneers. When stains are on the surface of teeth, they can often be reversed with the bleaching process involved in many teeth whitening methods. However, if the stains are more severe, such as from tetracycline, you may require a solution like veneers, which conceal cosmetic concerns like stains, as well chips, cracks, and gaps.

Do you want to lighten your teeth and remove discoloration? Schedule an appointment with Dr. Skasko to learn how you can achieve bright, beautiful teeth you can’t help but show off!

What Are My Tooth Replacement Options?

The best replacement for a missing tooth will vary based on the patient’s unique needs and lifestyle. At Elite Dental Dr. Andrew E. Skasko offers a variety of tooth replacement options to restore oral function while ensuring highly natural-looking results. For patients with only one missing tooth, the most beneficial options typically include a dental bridge or a dental implant with a porcelain crown attached. If several teeth need to be replaced, conventional dentures, implant dentures, and implant bridges are often the ideal replacement options. Each of these restorations can be customized to fill the gaps left behind and be virtually undetectable from the surrounding teeth.

Utilizing advanced smile design technology, Dr. Skasko works with his patients to create a digital mockup of their new restoration to allow them to “try on” their tooth replacement and provide feedback. This helps him to better understand the patient’s expectations and plan the details of their treatment accordingly. During this process, Dr. Skasko educates the individual on their options to ensure they understand both the benefits and limitations of the different restoration types.

Hidden Consequences of Losing Teeth

Teeth can come loose and eventually be lost due to a number of causes, including decay, gum disease, injury, or advanced wear over time. While a missing tooth may initially only seem like an aesthetic concern, there are a number of hidden problems that can occur over time if the missing tooth isn’t replaced.

  • The remaining teeth begin to shift. If a lost tooth is not replaced, this can cause the adjacent teeth to move into the space since there isn’t support to keep them in position.
  • Bone starts to be resorbed. When a tooth is missing, there is no longer a root to stimulate the jawbone. This leads to bone recession and a decrease in bone mass.
  • Gum tissue gradually recedes. As the bone deteriorates, the gum tissue will also begin to recede since there isn’t a structure for support.
  • The lower portion of the face may change in shape. This is caused by missing or slowly deteriorating oral structures that previously contributed to the full cheek appearance.
  • The face may look prematurely aged. Between tooth loss and the teeth gradually wearing down, the distance between the nose and chin may begin to decrease leading to wrinkles and an older facial appearance.

Since a variety of issues can present themselves when a tooth is not replaced, Dr. Andrew Skasko offers multiple treatment options for patients to choose from—from bridges and conventional dentures to dental implants and implant-supported dentures. Dr. Skasko will meet with you to perform an oral examination and discuss what you hope to achieve with your tooth replacement. In many cases, dental implant-based solutions are recommended if the patient proves to be a good candidate. This is because implants are the most lifelike replacement for a missing tooth and are the only solution that can help prevent bone resorption.
